Salève Landscape – C. Zwahlen

CHF 200.00

Oil on canvas signed C. Zwahlen, dated 1937, depicting the Salève as seen from the Geneva countryside. Authentic piece in its original gilded frame.

This oil on canvas is the work of Christian Zwahlen (Bern, 1904 – 1977), a Swiss regionalist painter renowned for his Geneva and Lake Geneva landscapes. The artist sensitively captures the Geneva countryside, with its flowery meadows and typical farms, dominated by the imposing silhouette of the Salève. The soft and natural treatment of light is characteristic of his style.

Dated 1937, this work reflects a period when the return to classical landscape and local traditions was very strong in French-speaking Switzerland. The subject – the Salève seen from the fields – is an emblematic motif of the Geneva region, highly sought after by local collectors.

The brushwork is visible and confident. The slightly cloudy sky, the varied greens of the meadows, and the red roofs of the farms create a peaceful and balanced scene. The artist's signature and the date are in the upper right corner of the canvas.

The overall condition is good. The original gilded frame shows a natural patina with some signs of wear consistent with its age. The canvas shows no tears or apparent restorations. Some slight signs of wear on the edges of the frame.
